NOTIFICATION TIMELINE:

In March the U-M Office of Financial Aid (OFA) begins sending award notification emails to entering applicants who submitted their application materials by March 1. Later applicants are notified on a rolling basis, as OFA receives their application information. It takes several weeks to process a student's financial aid application; therefore, you are encouraged to complete and submit your aid application early so you will be notified early.

You might be requested to send to OFA additional documents. If these documents are needed to verify your eligibility for financial aid, you will be sent notification that you have an estimated award notice available (incoming/prospective students only).  If this occurs, submit the required materials or information by the date specified so that OFA can calculate a new financial aid package and send you an official award notification email.  If you do not respond by the specified deadline date, your estimated awards will be cancelled.

For 2009-2010 Fall/Winter aid:  If OFA requests that you submit additional application materials, we must receive them by May 31, 2009, in order for you to be considered for all aid programs, including grant aid.  (It is not sufficient that the materials are postmarked by this date; we must receive them by this date.)   If you do not submit the requested documents, OFA will not be able to process your aid package and you will not receive any financial aid (grants, Work-Study, or loans).

It usually takes two to four weeks to process an application after all necessary materials are received by OFA, depending on the volume of applications.

  • Incoming first-year and transfer students: OFA makes an effort to notify you of your aid eligibility by the May 1 enrollment deposit deadline.
  • Continuing students: OFA begins sending award notifications beginning in mid-June.

Revised Award Notice:  After you have received notification of your official award notice, you may receive notification that you have a revised award notice available.  This occurs if additional information was received by OFA and a change was made to your financial aid package.  Revised award notices replace any award notices previously received.

Note to Incoming
Freshmen and Transfer Students

You must be admitted to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor before your financial aid application can be processed.  Accepting the U-M financial aid award offer listed on your Award Notice does not mean you are accepting your admission to the University. In order to accept your admission to U-M, you must notify the office that admitted you (e.g., Undergraduate Admissions, Rackham, etc.) by paying the enrollment deposit.
